Calling all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers and adults! Plan now to attend the 4th annual Air Zoo Scout Rally to be held at the Air Zoo and the Michigan Space Science Center on July 31 – August 3, 2008. The price of the event for the weekend is only $25 for youth and $20 for adults. This includes admission to the Air Zoo, the Michigan Space Science Center, a patch, materials, activities, camping at the Air Zoo and a world class fire bowl.
Our mission of the Air Zoo Scout Rally is to provide Scouts and Scouters with a fun filled experience that would open minds to a new world of everlasting adventure and introduce them to the world of aviation.
Boy Scouts and Venturers will have an opportunity to take their first flight in an airplane with the EAA Young Eagles and fulfill part of the Aviation Merit Badge. Rockets will be built and launched as part of the Space Exploration Merit Badge. The Kalamazoo Astronomical Society provided telescopes for stargazing and solar gazing, as part of the Astronomy Merit Badge.
Cub Scouts will enjoy two days of fun filled action packed activities including earning many different belt loops and pins (Astronomy, Weather, Music and Volleyball), crafts, sports, a bottle rocket launch and a space derby. (Cubs will need to build their space derby rocket before the event so they will have more time to participate in all the other activities). Webelos and their parents may camp overnight if attending the event with a host troop.
We will also have full run of the AIR ZOO and the Michigan Space Science Center including a fleet of full motion Flight Simulators. Get ready for a mission in one of the most advanced full-motion flight simulators in the world available to civilians. Here comes the heart pounding and quick breathing – in just a few seconds, this adventure will be literally in your hands. You can put your fighter through stomach-churning barrel rolls and hair-raising touchdowns on a carrier deck. Strafe the landscape with your machine guns. Launch a missile to wipe out an enemy tank. Remember, you’re in control.
The space shuttle simulator is a 3-D tour of duty aboard the space shuttle. As you settle in and get ready for launch, you learn the mission objective: the International Space Station. You watch as the last piece of the station is maneuvered delicately into place.
With the real work done, you can relax and take in some out-of-this-world views of Mother Earth. Then you’ll rumble through a fiery re-entry and touch down on terra firma: mission complete.
WOW! And still have more to do including Lunar Leap – (Hopping craters like an Apollo astronaut, guests will be able to get the feel of lunar gravity—1/6 of the Earth’s) and the Space Walk – (Astronauts learn to do complex tasks upside-down and sideways in a trainer like this one. Secured in a pivoting harness, visitors walk treads around the cylinder to change orientation). And the 4D Missions theater, the World’s largest hand painted mural (in the Guinness Book of records), and 80 rare airplanes like the SR-71b Blackbird, XP - 55 and P-40 Flying Tiger. And much much more!
Several displays will be provided including the Portage Fire Dept., Portage Swat Team, Drag Cars, Star Wars re-enactors and RC Flyers to names a few.
Coleman’s Factory Discount Store will be bringing a truckload of Outdoor gear to sell at special greatly discounted prices you will only find at this Event!
